What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage
What is Lymphatic Drainage? I think to answer that question we need to understand a little about what the Lymphatic System does and why it is so important. The Lymphatic System is present throughout most of the body and is designed to transport lymph and remove metabolic waste. It’s also important for the balance of tissue fluid, the immune system and for facilitating absorption of fatty substances from the digestive system. Essentially we now know how important it is in getting rid of toxins in the body, aiding in fluid retention and that its an important part of the immune system. Now, to understand what Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is as a treatment lets first find out where it originated. It was developed in 1932 by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid, a naturopath. They both dedicated their lives to the study and understanding of human anatomy and physiology and the study of the Lymphatic System. Dr. Emil Vodder became interested in the Lymphatic System while treating patients with conditions such as acne, migraines and sinusitis, he could feel swollen lymph nodes in their necks. He believed the swelling or congestion was the underlying cause of the disorders because the lymph nodes had become unable to cleanse the tissues therefore contributing to these symptoms. He believed the lymph nodes could be massaged in a way to relieve their congestion. It was at this point that Dr. Emil and his wife Esrid began using light pressured circular stretching and pumping of the skin over the congested lymph nodes and with this method the symptoms disappeared. This is how Manual Lymphatic drainage began. They went on to create a whole range of specialised techniques that could be used to support the Lymphatic System and aid in the healing process. It was then in the 1960 that various doctors began contacting Dr. Emil about other conditions that his new therapy may help with. Since this time it has been a therapy that has continued to spread throughout the world and found to be useful for so many conditions raining from lymphedema, digestive problems, bloating, fluid retention along with so much more.
